Great Australian WalksRenowned actor, presenter, and comedian Julia Zemiro takes viewers on a breathtaking journey across Australia’s most fascinating walking trails in an exciting new documentary series. Presented by SBS and set to premiere on August 10, “Great Australian Walks with Julia Zemiro” reveals the mesmerizing beauty of Australia’s landscapes and the untold stories.

The ten-part series, produced by Mint Pictures, promises a fascinating amalgamation of history, geography, science, travel, and culture as it traverses Australia’s great southern land. You can tune in every week at 7.30 pm on SBS and SBS On Demand to join Julia on an intimate exploration of the country’s most striking and historically rich walking trails.

The series showcases myriad picturesque tracks ranging from the sun-drenched beaches of Byron Bay, Kiama, Bondi, and Point Nepean, to the breathtaking heights of Tasmania’s Mount Wellington and NSW’s Blue Mountains. It further includes Melbourne’s iconic Yarra Trail, exploring NSW, Victoria, ACT, and Tasmania regions.

Each episode unfolds the awe-inspiring beauty of these trails with a unique set of guests, including historians, local legends, First Australians, and new Australians. The series thereby weaves in heartwarming and inspiring tales that showcase the vibrant facets of Australia’s landscapes.

Prominent guests include acclaimed actor Tasma Walton, former Wallabies Captain David Pocock, renowned bassist Brian Ritchie, Pete O’Doherty of Mental as Anything, former Masterchef AU contestant Mindy Woods, World Champion Surfer Pauline Menczer, and accomplished author and journalist Brigid Delaney.

“Great Australian Walks” utilizes a tasteful mix of nostalgic archival footage to resurrect the history behind each trail, spotlighting tales that have shaped Australia’s multicultural identity. The show covers an array of narratives from those who have sustained the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra to the keepers of Australia’s oldest synagogue and trailblazing stories like that of the World Champion female surfer from the AACTA-nominated documentary Girls Can’t Surf.

Julia Zemiro, the series presenter and executive producer, shared her exhilaration about her adventures, “It’s a beautiful feeling to have experienced these walks, especially after the pandemic. From exploring coasts and inland terrains to country and urban walks, I can’t wait to share these experiences with you.”

Bernadine Lim, SBS Senior Commissioning Editor for Documentaries, emphasized the series’ role in connecting audiences to stories that have shaped Australia’s rich multicultural history, expressing admiration for Zemiro’s charm and curiosity.

The producer and Mint Pictures Creative Director, Dan Goldberg, conceptualized the series during Covid-19 lockdowns to encourage viewers to explore Australia’s stunning landscapes despite restrictions on movement.

Each episode of “Great Australian Walks with Julia Zemiro” will feature a unique, accessible, and achievable one-day walk selected in collaboration with veteran walks expert and former travel journalist Bruce Elder.

Furthering its commitment to inclusivity, the series will be subtitled in Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean on SBS On Demand.
