Palm Court Lounge at The PhoeniciaMalta’s legendary Hotel Phoenicia has been the most prestigious place since its opening in 1947.  The Phoenicia is also one of the most sought-after locations by locals and visitors for dining in style.  Whether to impress a loved one, a business associate, or the person in the mirror, The Phoenicia provides an array of dining experiences that can turn a simple meal into a cherished memory.

The morning’s breakfast buffet offers the array of standard options expected in every hotel. Still, at The Phoenicia, the fruit, yogurt, and omelettes are supplemented by traditional Maltese foods unique to the country.  Cheeses such as Tan-Nar have been made in Malta for centuries; the island of Gozo is especially famous for its cheeses, and rightfully so.  Maltese biscuits and the traditional honey rings known as qaghaq ta’ l-ghasel also help start the day with the tastes of Malta.  Maltese can be almost indecipherable as a language, but devouring honey rings is much easier than saying the name; eat and enjoy.  Originally made only during the Christmas season, these irresistible wreaths of pastry have become a favourite throughout the year.  Similarly delectable are biskuttini tar-rahal, known in English as village biscuits.  These light treats are perfect companions to the morning’s double espresso.

Suppose you feel hungry after sightseeing with Q Travel, a gay-owned tour operator seeing a noticeable increase in LGBTQI+ visitors to Malta. There will still be time for The Phoenicia’s famous afternoon tea, served in The Palm Lounge until 6 pm.  Formerly an open-air courtyard, The Palm Lounge is now one of The Phoenicia’s most important rooms for socialising.  Preceding the classic tiered trays of petits fours are the classic finger sandwiches served in generous portions, accompanied by special teas.  Very thoughtfully, the afternoon tea is offered in vegan and gluten-free options for those with dietary restrictions or preferences.

Then there is dinner, an event unto itself at The Phoenicia.  The outdoor terrace and its exceptional view of historical Valletta complement the outstanding menu in the warmer months.  Choose from an array of international and local dishes and finish with a light dessert.  The food can be accompanied by fine wines, likewise coming in international or local options; Maltese wine is virtually unknown in the country but is nevertheless excellent. For a deeper appreciation of Maltese wine production, a tasting tour of the vineyards is easily arranged by the hotel’s amiable concierges or with Q Travel.

The Phoenicia is one of the most prominent supporters of Malta’s upcoming EuroPride Valletta 2023 festival from 7-17 September.  As is the Malta Tourism Authority, The Phoenicia is going all out to welcome EuroPride visitors, and a more agreeable base for enjoying the festivities would be hard to imagine.  The circular plaza just outside the hotel’s front door will be an essential venue for EuroPride, and the hotel’s swimming pool will no doubt be the scene of many beautiful bodies basking in the warm Mediterranean sun.  Yet another food and beverage outlet at The Phoenicia is the expansive pool deck café, where casual meals and serious cocktails can be enjoyed in sublime surroundings.
