This July is shaping up to be a momentous one for renowned Norwegian cruise and shipping company, Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express.

Earlier this week it commemorated its 130th anniversary with an extraordinary day of celebrations.

Held, fittingly, at the company’s birthplace of Stokmarknes in northern Norway, the day started with members of the local community joining staff, crew members and guests to witness a cortège of small boats accompany Hurtigruten’s ships into the harbour, after which they were invited on board to explore each ship at their leisure.

Celebrations continued throughout the day and included complimentary entry into the Hurtigruten Museum and a free concert, both of which added to the festive atmosphere.

In a gesture exemplifying the strong historical bond between Hurtigruten and Stokmarknes, the event also saw the company’s Captain Geir Arne Johannessen of the MS Richard With present mayor, Siv Dagny Aasvik, with a new bow, in recognition of the fact that the ship will call the port its home harbour going forwards.

With 130th celebration events and activities expected to continue throughout the remainder of the year, this week’s actual anniversary holds particular significance for all those associated with Hurtigruten.

Reflecting on the company’s first historic journey which began on 2 July 1893, when Captain Richard With set sail aboard the DS Vesteraalen from Trondheim for Hammerfest, Damian Perry, Hurtigruten’s Managing Director, VP Sales & Marketing, Asia-Pacific believes the company has revolutionised transportation along the Norwegian coast.

“For over 130 years, Hurtigruten has sailed continuously between the north and south of Norway, accommodating everything from traditional cargo to passengers and international guests. During that time it has always strived to provide its guests with unforgettable experiences, and this anniversary is a testament to the company’s enduring legacy and its significant contribution to the region.

He adds, “As a company, we’re looking forward to continuing our rich heritage, delivering exceptional voyages, and creating cherished memories for our guests for many more years to come.”
