Anaheim, California, has been inspiring global visitors for decades. From leaving the airport in on-demand electric vehicles to tasting the local flavours and making responsible hotel choices, Anaheim encourages visitors to travel responsibly and sustainably this Earth Day as the city continues to take actions towards supporting our planet.

Local Public Transport ‘Driving’ Sustainability

Anaheim Transportation Network is a leader in the public transportation space in the USA when it comes to sustainable travel. The city is home to the largest electric bus fleet in Southern California – Anaheim Regional Transportation (ART) is a system of interchangeable public routes in-and-around the City of Anaheim and Orange County operated by all-electric busses. FRAN – Anaheim’s micro-transit service fleet is made up of six-passenger, all-electric vehicles offer on-demand service in the Center City downtown corridor. Anaheim Transport Network, the company behind FRAN, has also recently launched a new on-demand airport transportation service of sustainable electric vehicles, EVE, connecting John Wayne Airport to the greater Anaheim area.

Historic Orange Packing House Ready for Future

Built in 1919, the Packing House was originally a Sunkist citrus packing house used to wash, grade, and pack the citrus before being sent across the country. Redeveloped sympathetically to its roots as a food hall and marketplace filled with locally grown and sourced products, the historic building proves to be future-ready. It has solar panels installed for clean energy. Many of the plants around the Packing District are also drought-tolerant, further contributing to water preservation. The Packing House also counts on 2 EV charging stations to accommodate guests with electric vehicles and they have a compost bin for all tenants to dispose of their organic waste.

Locally sourced

Despite the USA being known for its big-name chain restaurants, California has grown a reputation for its farm to fork fayre, and visitors to Anaheim can support local farmers and growers while enjoying high-quality food. Poppy & Seed is an upscale American restaurant set inside a modern greenhouse within the Anaheim Packing District. They source all their food supplies locally to support farmers and fishmongers from San Pedro to the Central Valley. The coffee they serve also comes from a female-owned roaster Sir Owlverick’s out of Anaheim, too. In addition to partnering with local farmers, fishermen, bakers and artisan cheesemakers, THE RANCH grows organic produce at their farm located in the foothills of the city of Orange and the Santa Ana Mountains. Fresh produce can be sought from local farmers markets, Downtown Anaheim Farmers Market (Thursdays) and Anaheim & Orange County Farmers, too.

Sustainable Stays

Visitors can rest their heads in hotels that are taking great strides in improving their sustainability practices. The Desert Palms Hotel & Suites uses slow flow showerheads, biodegradable cleaning products and plates and cutlery. Additionally, they give back 5% from each booking directly to the Autism Speaks Foundation and Susan G. Komen. As part of the Embassy Suites by Hilton Meet with Purpose program, Embassy Suites Anaheim North offers Carbon Neutral Meetings to event planners to support their organisation’s environmental and social impact goals.

Disneyland Resort Anaheim makes Positive Strides

Walt Disney once quoted “conservation isn’t just the business of a few people. It’s a matter that concerns all of us” and 100 years since Disney’s inception, the organisation’s conservation goals and practices throughout its parks and surrounding communities show commitment to reducing waste, water usage and putting strategies in place to support a healthier planet. Among Disney’s environmental goals, the company is committed to working towards zero waste to landfill for its wholly owned and operated parks, resorts, and cruise line, by 2030, as well as aiming for net zero emissions across all direct operations by this time. Disneyland Resort was recognised by the EPA with the Food Recovery Challenge award for its food recovery efforts. To fight drought, Disneyland Resort’s recent efforts have included using artificial turf and implementing a sophisticated irrigation control system.
