Not often on travellers’ radar when visiting the island of Ireland, the historic city ofDerry~Londonderry is full of pleasant surprises for anyone who pops in for a visit. Here are just a few reasons the city should not be missed.

1. Ireland’s Only Completely Intact Walled City

The only completely intact walled city on the island of Ireland, and one of the finest examples of walled cities in Europe dating back 400 years, this is where the Wild Atlantic Way meets the Causeway Coastal Route.

With seven gates that encompass the original town, which still preserves its Renaissance style street plan, Derry~Londonderry is one of the few cities in Europe that never saw its fortifications breached, withstanding several sieges.

2. Home of Derry Girls

This LegenDerry city is home of the popular TV comedy Derry Girls. The rip-roaring series set in the 90s follows the lives of five teenagers as they navigate their way through their teenage years amidst the backdrop of the Troubles.

Fans of the series will no doubt enjoy Derry Guided Tours or Martin McCrossan City Tours, which visit all the iconic film locations and even the Derry Girls mural in the city.

3. Foodie’s Paradise

Derry~Londonderry surprises with its vibrant foodie scene of award winning restaurants, cafes, pubs and eateries in abundance.

From traditional pubs with live traditional Irish music played into the small hours of the morning to a trendy cocktail bars or perhaps the opportunity to pull one’s own pint, there is no shortage of options. There’s even the beer masterclass for beer lovers!

4. Festivals

Voted by USA Today for the best Halloween festival in the world, Derry~Londonderry is hosts a number spectacular events throughout the year including the Legenderry Street Food Festival, City of Derry Choir Festival, IMBOLC, and Foyle Cup among many others.

There is also the City of Derry Jazz & Big Band Festival, which is Northern Ireland’s biggest jazz event, which has become a significant part of the city’s life and culture since its inception in 2002.

5. Art & Craft

When it comes to art, the Free Derry Corner, a historical landmark located in the Bogside area of the city, and the world famous People’s Gallery which comprises of twelve large scale murals, are a must.

There is also the quirky Craft Village, a hidden treasure trove, which gives visitors a glimpse into one of the most beguiling quarters located just outside the 17th Century City Walls. The village offers escapism from the bustling city centre streets and opens visitors up to its sheer beauty and mesmerising charm. A visit to the many bespoke crafters, including the Walled City Crafters, Number 19 , and Knitfield by Edel MacBride, an established knitwear designer who specialises in Aran designs will surely impress.
