The Interlude PentridgeIn a groundbreaking move, Melbourne welcomes The Interlude, the country’s most extraordinary urban retreat. Situated within the billion-dollar lifestyle precinct of the former HM Prison Pentridge, this one-of-a-kind wellness haven redefines the concept of transformation. Today marks the official opening of The Interlude, with its first esteemed guest, Dennis Bear, a former Senior Prison Officer of HM Prison Pentridge.

Once notorious for housing some of Australia’s most infamous inmates, including legendary bushranger Ned Kelly and the modern-day After Dark bandit Doug Morgan, HM Prison Pentridge has undergone a breathtaking metamorphosis. The Interlude is now a testament to innovative restoration and architectural prowess, setting a new standard in urban retreats.

The centrepiece of The Interlude is an underground swimming pool of remarkable proportions. This feat of engineering involved an arduous three-month excavation through solid bluestone and basalt, meticulously removing stacked boulders with a conveyor belt to preserve the historic structure’s integrity.

The restoration process was arduous, with no blueprints to guide the construction crew. Countless aspects required reverse engineering, including the strategic placement of air conditioning units under the beds due to rocks in the roof, ensuring no possibility of inmate escapes.

Comprising 19 suites, The Interlude presents an architectural marvel, seamlessly connecting four or five former prison cells by breaking through the thick bluestone walls. Creating a single suite demanded nine months of meticulous craftsmanship, resulting in a harmonious blend of vaulted ceilings, stone walls, and contemporary finishes that exude the essence of a modern hotel.

The emergence of The Interlude epitomizes Melbourne and Victoria’s resurgence in post-pandemic tourism. With over 900 additional rooms provided by recent hotel openings, the focus has shifted from merely offering accommodations to delivering unforgettable experiences.

Guests at The Interlude embark on curated itineraries, immersing themselves in the vibrant food, wine, historical and cultural scenes of North Melbourne. Collaborating with local producers and businesses, The Interlude has partnered with esteemed establishments such as Koko Black for delectable chocolates, Impala & Peacock for exquisite teas, and Jamsheed, Melbourne’s pioneering urban winery in the south of Preston. The National Trust also contributes to the enriching experiences offered by The Interlude.

It is crucial to acknowledge that the land upon which Pentridge was erected held great significance for the Wurundjeri people. Once a sacred area serving as a gathering place and a bountiful source of water, flora, and fauna, the site completes its transformative journey. Bill Nicholson, a respected Wurundjeri Elder, conducted a poignant Welcome to Country ceremony, symbolically purifying the entire location as it embarks on this new chapter of its diverse history.

“The Interlude” is an aptly named haven within the historical wing of B Division, distinct from the modern Adina Apartment Hotel Pentridge Melbourne, situated beyond the Bluestone fence line. Lead-in rates for The Interlude start at $729 per night, encompassing an array of inclusive urban retreat experiences.
