HanedaToday, Virgin Australia marked a historic milestone, launching its inaugural flight service between Cairns and Haneda, Tokyo, a first in aviation history. The maiden flight, identified as VA77, commenced at 1.15 pm (AEST), promising to touch Japanese soil by 8:00 pm (JST).

The year-round daily service brings over 2,000 affordable weekly seats, forging a brand-new travel corridor between Australia and Japan. Backed by the Queensland Government’s Attracting Aviation Investment Fund, Cairns Airport is set to evolve into a strategic hub for Virgin Australia’s Tokyo service. It will facilitate seamless, same-day connecting flights between the airport and major Australian cities, including Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane.

Celebrating the commencement of this service, Virgin Australia dropped its ‘Take off for Tokyo’ sale, unveiling return airfares starting from an attractive $699* (Economy Lite from Cairns). The deal, expiring at midnight AEST on Tuesday, 4th July 2023, offers a golden chance for globetrotters to immerse themselves in the allure of Tokyo.

Complementing this feat, Virgin Australia has reimagined its Business Class and Economy menu, crafting a culinary experience that marries Japanese flavours with traditional Western options. Signature dishes include a Japanese bento box, pan-fried pork dumplings, miso soup, green tea cake, and many popular local snacks.

Meanwhile, Virgin Australia is set to welcome the first of its eight new Boeing 737-8 fuel-efficient aircraft from Seattle, marking another significant stride. The new aircraft will commence operating on the Cairns-Tokyo route upon obtaining the required regulatory approvals.

The journey from Cairns to Tokyo represents more than just a flight. Nick Rohrlach, Velocity Frequent Flyer CEO and Japan Services Representative highlighted the potential of the new service in bolstering Virgin Australia’s international network and extending more value and choice to Australians.

“Our debut services to Haneda, Tokyo signifies an important evolution of our international footprint,” said Rohrlach. “We’re excited about creating a convenient gateway for Japanese travellers to explore the beauty of Far North Queensland, thus fuelling regional tourism.”

Emphasizing the launch’s relevance to Velocity members, Rohrlach added, “Our members can now earn and redeem Points when travelling to over 500 destinations globally with Virgin Australia and our partner airlines.”

Cairns Airport Chief Operating Officer Garry Porter also welcomes the new service who noted the perfect timing for the direct flights to commence. Porter reiterated the potential for these flights to attract Japanese visitors, particularly during Japan’s winter ski season, which invariably lures Aussie winter sports enthusiasts.

The maiden flight heralds an era of seamless connectivity, affordable fares, and superior in-flight experience, all tailored to craft unforgettable travel memories for Virgin Australia’s guests.
